Determine Your Budget

The design, workmanship, materials and finishing determine the quality and price of any instrument.  Playing on a sub-standard instrument can be discouraging and limit progress.  Higher quality instruments may help a developing player sound amazing and can last a lifetime.  Plus, a good brand will hold its value if maintained properly.

Decide What's Best For Your Child

The instrument does not make the musician; the musician makes the instrument.  Purchasing an instrument brings responsibility for care and regular practice.  Invest in an instrument that is financially comfortable for you and meets the needs of your child.

Talk To The Experts

Get recommendations from band directors, private teachers, and music professionals with the experience to direct you to products and dealers they trust.  Local music instrument dealers usually provide sales, repair service, parts and accessories with an instrument purchase.  Consider carefully before purchasing an instrument from a merchant who does not provide these services.

Will This Instrument Be Used For Marching Band?

Marching band instruments have to endure bus trips, rain, wind, and potential damage.  Entry level instruments are well suited for marching band.  Professional, more delicate instruments are not recommended for marching band.

Test Drive The Instrument

If your student is a beginner, ask an experienced player to test the instrument for you.  If your student is not a beginner, allow them to try the instrument. Ask these questions:  How does it sound?  How does it feel?

Know What You Are Paying For

  • What are the return, replacement, and repair policies available from the merchant?  Ask for a full explanation of policies in writing.

  • Does the instrument come with a case, mouthpiece, cleaning products, etc., or will these items need to be purchased separately?

  • Used instruments may be less expensive, but can also be risky.  Always have a qualified instrument repair technician inspect the instrument to ensure it is as advertised and is in good playing condition.
